| History: | "Named ""La Rancheria,"" meaning ""the settlement,"" by Francisco Antonio Maurelle on ""May 31, 1779,* * * because there was a stockade on it."" He found it uninhabited by with a number of good houses (Wagner, 1937, p. 404). In 1923 the name was formally applied to this island by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS); its location was previously not clearly defined, and the name was in limited use." |
