Baker (1906, p. 509) translated the name ""Poverty Island,"" and U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) corrected this erroneous translation in 1935, with ""named by the Russians because the islet was used as a place of refuge for the women and children by the natives while the warriors were doing battle with invading tribes.""" |
