History: | "Named by Leffingwell (1919, p. 92), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS); derived from the name ""Jags"" and modified to ""Jago"" in order to ""place the name of Lieutenant Jago of Collinson's (Captain Richard, Royal Navy (RN)) ship, on the map * * *."" The name ""Jags,"" according to Leffingwell, is the Eskimo attempt to pronounce ""the whaler's nickname for a drunken native who first braved the devils that were supposed t o dwell on that river.""" |
