History: | "U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported the local name in 1904 as ""Lowell Island,"" and U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) gave the local name as ""Fox Island"" in 1905. Because both these names ""are much duplicated"" the Board on Geographic Names (BGN) officially bestowed the present name in 1906; it means ""fox"" in French." |
