History: | "According to Captain Vancouver (1798, v. 3, p. 152-153), Royal Navy (RN), these were named ""Chiswell Isles"" in 1786 by Captain Nathaniel Portlock. They may have been named for ""Trench Chiswell, a very rich man"" (Wagner, 1937, p. 380). The Russians called them ""Ostrova Ayaliki,"" (Ayaliki Islands) which may be an Eskimo name (Tebenkov, 1852, map 6)." |
