National Historic Landmark
In June 1942, Kiska, along with Attu Island, was occupied by the Japanese. The island was abandoned by them in response to the fall of Attu and American attacks on Japanese shipping. The Japanese withdrawal was accomplished in secrecy, with no loss of lives.
