History: Former Eskimo village or camp name meaning "big mound (pingosugtuk)" or "pingosugrumiut," meaning "people of the big mound" shown on British Admiralty (Brit. Adm.) Chart 593, 1827-53. Ivan Petroff's 10th Census of 1880 lists the name as "Pinoshuragin," population 29.
