History: | Named by Reid (1896, pl. 86), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), for Henry Platt Cushing, 1860-1921 a companion of Reid in 1890 on his trip to Glacier Bay. Cushing taught geology at Western Reserve University 1892-1921. He was also a member of the New York State Geological Survey. He wrote several papers on the geology of the Muir Glacier region. In 1890 the Muir Glacier was much more extensive than now because it terminated below Adams Inlet and produced a plateau-like glacial expanse in the vicinity of the present Wachusett Inlet. |
