| History: | "Named in 1893 for Harry Fielding Reid, 1859-1943, by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Reid, geologist and professor at the Case School of Applied Sciences and Johns Hopkins University, visited Glacier Bay in 1890 and 1892. At that time the name, ""Reid Inlet,"" was applied to the upper end of Glacier Bay east of Russell I., which was the terminus of the Grand Pacific and Johns Hopkins Glaciers. Subsequently, these glaciers have retreated, uncovering Tarr and Johns Hopkins Inlets. Reid Glacier has also retreated from the valley it formerly occupied to form another inlet. The name ""Reid Inlet"" is now restricted to this feature." |
