History: | "Named in 1794 by Captain George Vancouver, Royal Navy (RN), for Evan Nepean of the British Admiralty (Wagner, 1937, p. 399). Lieutenant Joseph Whidbey of Vancouver's party explored the point on August 3, 1794. On Vancouver's original chart and the French copy of it, the name was spelled ""Nepean,"" and this form was widely used. However, in his text, Captain Vancouver spelled it ""Napean.""" |
