History: | Named in 1869 by Commander R. W. Meade, U.S. Navy (USN), for Major General Henry Wager Halleck, 1815-72, USA, then in command at Sitka. General Halleck upon graduating from West Point was appointed to the Corps of Engineers. During the Civil War he was commander in chief of the Union armies from 1862 to 1864, when he was replaced by General U. S. Grant. He was in command of the military division of the Pacific, 1865-69. |
