History: | "Spanish word meaning ""whale"" applied in 1897 as ""Balena"" by Lieutenant Commander J. F. Moser, U.S. Navy (USN). Named ""los Mondragones"" in 1799 by Don Juan de la Bodegay Quadra and Francisco Antonio Maurelle ""Mondragon is a (Spanish) family name***"" (Wagner, 1937, p. 473). They were called ""Balaena Rocks"" and included in the ""Fish Egg Islets"" of Lieutenant Commander Nichols (U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS), 1891, p.121), U.S. Navy (USN).
