| History: | "Named for a surveyor, Kudiakof, who was sent to the area by Lieutenant Sarichev, Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), in 1791 (Baker, 1906, p. 384) and published by Lutke (1836, p. 291) as ""Khoudiakoff."" These islands were called ""O(strova) Chimyduy"" or ""Chimyudy Islands"" by Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 24), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN). This Aleut name may possibly be derived from the words ""cimguq"" and ""uddag"" which, according to R. H. Geoghegan, mean ""small saltwater fish"" (common to this area) and ""bay.""" |
