History: | Named Bukhta Perenosnoi or Portage Bay in 1847 by the Russian Hydrographic Dept., for the portage across the peninsula from the head of this bay to Herendeen Bay. Published by Captain Tebenkov as Bukh(ta) Balboa Bay Continued Perenosnaya (1852, map 24) irn. Balboa Bay was proposed in 1907 by S.S. Philbrick and adopted by Board on Geographic Names (BGN), but this feature is known locally as Portage Bay. |
