Spelled "amakhnak" by Captain Lutke (1836, p. 281), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN); "Amaknak" by U.S. Bureau of Fisheries (USBF) in 1888. According to R. H. Geoghegan, the name means "burial place," from "amaiknag" meaning "place of impurity".|
