History: | "This island was named ""for Mr. Kohl, a partner in the firm of Hutchinson, Kohl & Co., of San Francisco, which bought the vessels and other property of the Russian American Company in 1867 and organized the Alaska Commercial Company."" The name was proposed to Board on Geographic Names (BGN) as ""Kuhl"" in 1938 by U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office and was approved as ""Kohl"" the same year. The name was published in 1944 Aleutian Coast Pilot, (p. 135)." |
