History: | Named in 1942 by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) for the excursion steamer Steamship (SS) Spokane. After the great Yakutat Earthquake of 1899 excursion steamers had not been able to get to the vicinity of the Muir Glacier. In 1907, however, the SS Spokane succeeded for the first time in approaching to within one mile of the face of the glacier. |
