History: | "Visited and named by Ensign J. L. Purcell, U.S. Navy (USN), in 1884 (Stoney, 1900, p. 12). Lieutenant J. C. Cantwell, U.S. Revenue-Cutter Service (USRCS), in 1884 transcribed its Eskimo name as ""Emogarikchoit"" with a meaning given as ""little sea."" This name spelled ""E-mug-ge-row-che-uk,"" by Stoney is applied to a village on the lake." |
