History: | Named in September 1826 by Captain F. W. Beechey, Royal Navy (RN), for Lieutenant (later Sir Edward) Belcher, Royal Navy (RN), Supernumerary, Assistant Surveyor, and contributor to its journal on geological research. The following year he was responsible for the loss of the Blossom's barge and the lives of three of Beechey's men off Choris Peninsula. |
