History: | "Discovered by Captain Cook (1785, v. 2, p. 385), RN, on May 25, 1778, and named for Sir Joseph Banks, 1743-1820, English naturalist (Wagner, 1937, p. 375). The Russian Hydrographic Dept. transliterated the name in 1847 and published it as ""M(ys) Banks"" on Chart 1378. The Russian-American Company did likewise in 1849 and Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 22), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), published the name ""M(ys) Benks.""" |
