History: | "discovered on July 21, 1821, by Captain Lieutenant M. N. Vasiliev, Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), and named after his ship Otkritie (Discovery). Khromchenko of the Russian American Company found the island about the same time. ""Nounivak"" (sic) had been properly retained on charts and added, had this course been followed in other cases, much confusion and embarrassment would have been avoided." |
