History: | Named for the Dupont Powder Co., which stored powder for miners in a magazine built in 1914 near the mouth of the creek. Also called Mission Creek by miners for many years. There is some evidence that a Friends Mission was located here. Land along the beach, including the creek, was claimed for such a mission in 1889 (DeArmond, 1957, p. 16). The name Dupont Creek was published by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in 1918. |
