| History: | "Aleut name, derived from Cape Chiniak. Identified as ""Giniak Island"" in 1803-06 by von Langsdorff (1813-14, v. 2, p. 56) who said Cape Chiniak ""is bounded to the north by two small islands, one of which in the language of the country, is called Giniak * * *."" In 1849 the Russian American Company published the name ""Os(trov) Chiniakskoy,"" or ""Chiniak Island,"" for this feature." |
